Peppercorn Cafe @ SS15, Subang Jaya.

It was indeed a pure luxury to be able to have many varieties or types of English breakfast to chose from while residing in New Zealand. I always look forward for the weekends to come by so that I can have my daily breakfast at my favourite joint along Queens Street. They served the best breakfast I ever had in my life and will always cherished those moments.

Well, I find it rather difficult finding a restaurant in KL that makes good English or American breakfast. I have tried so many places big or small, famous or infamous, near and far but I always left with disappointment. Until now I am still searching for the ideal place .... but then again the search will go on .... this time to Subang Jaya.

This restaurant is situated in SS15 in Subang Jaya. It is a well known restaurant to the locals and many flock there for their breakfast set meals and also their lunch set meals. The restaurant wasn't difficult to find but finding a parking space for your car is. And this place is called 'Peppercorn Cafe'.

English Breakfast
As you can see from the picture their English breakfast set consists of 2 sunny side up egg, 1 halved sausage, 2 tiny slice of bacon, some baked beans and a couple of toasted bread. Your have a choice of either coffee or tea and a tiny glass of orange juice.

The other breakfast set comes with 2 sunny side up egg, 2 tiny slice of bacon, some baked beans, a couple of toasted bread and a piece of hash brown.

Well, what can I say about it. Nothing fantastic nor nothing great about it. But for something below RM10.00 this was really a good bargain. The only thing great is that we do not need to cook it and do the washing. Frankly, I could do a better version of this English breakfast.

Waffle
The waffle was good. Spread some butter or fruit jam on it to give it a better taste. Would have been great if there were ice-creams made available.

Conclusion : This restaurant is famous for it's value for money deals. It attracts many young patrons mainly uni-students. Breakfast and lunch crowd can be overwhelming. Restaurant set up is simple and nice, it's clean and service is ok lah. A look at their menu suggests they can dish something more complicated and more interesting compared to what we had. Value for money but portion could be better. A 3/5.

Cheers!

Restoran Ho Boh @ USJ, Subang Jaya.

'Lu Hoh Boh?'...... How are you?..... ahaha..... Hope I got it right. It's in Hokkien and I know nuts about that dialect. But this is dialect is widely spoken in Malaysia nowadays especially in places like Klang, Penang, Johor and almost every state in Malaysia.

But this time when I mentioned about 'Ho Boh' , I am referring to a restaurant in USJ Subang Jaya... simply called 'Restoran Ho Boh'. Of course Hoh lor ..... ahahahaha........... OK, that's all the Hokkien for today as I being a Cantonese find it pretty impossible to communicate in a different dialect.

The whole interior is designed based on the olden days kopitiam where wood dominates the whole place. Wooden walls made of wooden planks with the traditional finishing with modern looking wooden tables and chairs surrounding the entire outlet. There were also some marble top round tables scattered around the premise. Pretty ..... quite pretty.

But what I was interested is their food since they brag their food contains NO added MSG. Frankly, I have never come across any restaurant in this country that is MSG free. So this is going to be a big challenge for me and also for the restaurant.

Ho Boh Rui Cha @ RM6.00
Frankly, I am not a big fan of 'rui cha'. My mates ordered one which was supposed to be famous here. I had to give it a go and I find the taste to be really interesting. Something I didn't expect it to be good. Nevertheless, it will take a miracle for me to finish the entire bowl. I would prefer nasi lemak. LOL. My mates did enjoy it as they found it to be really delicious.

Pan Mee @ RM5.50
This is more like it. I wonder why is it nowadays that so many eateries are selling 'pan mee'. It is not really a special delicacy and it was supposed to be one of Malaysia hawker food. And yet there are restaurants that specializes only in serving 'pan mee'.

I kind of enjoyed this bowl of noodle. A little salty but it was really mouth watering. The chilli that came with it was a good dipping sauce for those who love a little spice in their noodle. Not too bad-lah.

Fried Rice @ RM5.50
And finally something which is a favourite with most Malaysians. A simple plate of homemade fried rice. It was done really well as I loved fried rice to be really dry. It does taste good but not the best in town. With some chilli padi mixed with soya sauce, this additional dip will be pleasing and enticing and really made for each other with this lovely plate of fried rice.

Conclusion : A cool place for a simple yet delicious meal. The best part was it is really pocket friendly. And I choose to reserve my opinion on the No added MSG thingy. A 2/5.

Cheers!

Sakura Sakura Japanese Restaurant @ Subang Jaya

Weather was rather hot and it has been like this for the past weeks. Oh! how I wished for some rain showers. And the only rain showers I get is from my 'Grohe' rainshower set which I have in my masterbath ... something that I truly enjoy. This was the best way to reduce some body heat. :) Today is a special day as it is Sunday and because it is 'Father's Day'.

Since it was Sunday and Father's day too, we decided to have a lazy afternoon pampering our tired body by giving it some extra rest. And after all the resting, time for a food feast for the evening with our beloved father and mother in law.

Main Entrance
We took a drive to Subang Jaya in search for some really good Japanese food. Those that is not commercialized that we were seeking for. Everywhere was packed with people but we managed to find one which serves really good authentic Japanese food. This place is called 'Sakura Sakura'.

The minute you stepped into this outlet you will be greeted by their staff in Japanese. I truly enjoyed it as we felt really important. The environment of this restaurant is truly simple yet elegant. They really put in a lot of effort in making this place feel cosy and a lot of effort with the interior design too. Truly remarkable.

Moroheiya Ninniku @ RM15.00++
We were introduced to this lovely 'green' and was also highly recommended by their waitress. This vegetable is called 'Moroheiya' and is was supposed to be rich in A, B1, B2, minerals and calcium. And this is an organic plant too which do not contains any MSG. It was fried simply with garlic and sprinkle with some anchovies. This dish is really good ! Taste superb ! Two Thumbs Up !.... but the portion was really too little.

Teppan Gyoza @ RM10.00++
Not to be missed is the famous 'Teppan Gyoza'. It comes in a set of 5 lovely Gyoza which was not enough for all of us. It was truly remarkable, truly delicious, meat was well marinated, simply amazing. Highly recommended too !

Natsu Don @ RM18.00++
This is a box set rice set which comprises of some chicken cut into bite size mixed with a beaten egg. This set is my personal favorite and I will truly say that 'Sakura Sakura' took this dish one step further ~ delicious !

Chicken Teriyaki @ RM16.00++
The aroma of this dish was really breathtaking. It totally filled up our senses and all of us just wanted to grab a bite and continue to enjoy our dinner since so many marvelous dishes was brought to us. It was slightly salty but it was OK since it goes well with plain white rice.

Sukiyaki @ RM42.00++
And finally, a dish which I loved very much from the very first day I tasted it. This fantastic dish is called 'Sukiyaki'. I noticed nowadays most Japanese restaurant do not serve this dish anymore. I really wonder why? But this is found here at  'Sakura Sakura' because majority of their regular clients are Japanese and they always look for original authentic pure Japanese food.

Sukiyaki is normally done in a Japanese hot pot consisting of thinly sliced beef meat which is slowly cooked or simmered along with some vegetables, tofu, negi, mushroom and some jelly-noodles.

A tad too salty but this is the original taste of it. It was an amazing feat and amazing experience to have this fantastic dish served today. Goes really well with plain white rice and the soup is truly delicious.

Conclusion : Without any doubt I will rate this place a 5/5. This is for it's food quality which was amazingly delicious, plenty of variety to choose from, for it's environment, for it's decorations, for their hospitable service, for it's delicious food. I became an instant fan ! Keep it up !

Cheers!

Restaurant Hong Lim @ Subang Jaya

Honestly, I have been really busy lately and there was apparently no time at all for blogging. I love blogging but time wasn't on my side. I also love eating and apparently I have been eating non stop lately while my waistline just keep on increasing and increasing.....

SO much that I really would like to share it with my readers as food is really the best thing when it comes to sharing. My hunger for food brought us to so many places, new or old, doesn't matter as long as the food tasted good.

I really have no idea on where or what to have daily but with wonderful friends who are more than willing to share these places with brought light back. Chinese food was the pick of the day and the name of this restaurant is called 'Restaurant Hong Lim' which is situated in Subang Jaya.

Shark's Fins Soup @ RM9.90
We just couldn't resist the temptation of ordering a couple of personal served type 'Shark's Fins Soup' which was on offer going at RM9.90 per bowl. Eat your heart out cause you will never come across such delicacies at such a knock out price.

Portion was really huge indeed which could feed 2 adults. We like what we saw when the bowl was brought to us. Not too much starch was used which is good. It tasted a tad too salty which was still acceptable. The texture of the shark's fins and it's soup was just marvelous. Well done and I would have loved to go for another bowl but somehow there was just not enough room for another one.

Of course this was not the greatest I have ever had but it certainly was the most affordable yet delicious bowl I have ever came across. A big pat on the shoulder to the chef.

Loh Mee @ RM18.00
This was what we were here for. Highly recommended by our mate who lives not far from this restaurant. A big bowl of 'Loh Mee' for the 5 of us would do us a great deal. Delicious it was and everyone just wanted more and more. But we had to be careful with our intake as there will be more foodie on it's way to our table.

Loh Mee was good even coming from me who is not a big fan of this type of noodle. I have never fancied Loh Mee but this place really changed my perception towards it. The only set back was it was rather starchy.

Stewed CHicken @ RM25.00
... and this was also what we came for too. LOL. The aroma of this dish simply fills up the room and we could feel that all of us was attracted to it. Simply amazing, really. A tad too salty but overall this dish does taste magic. Goes very well with rice. There was a special name for it but I just couldn't remember it. But no worries just tell them that you wanted to order their signature chicken dish and they know what you are asking for.

Signature Bean Curd @ RM16.00
This too was not to be missed. Oh boy! all the dishes we ordered was just too fabulous and too yummy. This fried bean curd comes with minced fork mixed with some 'choy pou' in it. Such a delight to have this lovely bean curd in our mouth. Our tastebuds just kicked a couple of notch up! Just a tad too oily, though.

Fried French Beans @ RM11.00
A meal will not be complete without a plate of vegetable. This particular plate of fried french beans was just too oily. We wanted something really simple and have it fried it simply with garlic. And surprisingly it was a bomb. Simple and nice that is. Fried to perfection whereby the beans was not too soggy nor too cooked. It was crispy and it was a delight to chew these french guys. LOL.

Conclusion : Food was great! Price was just so-so. Chicken dish was overpriced. Promotional price on the shark's fins was a dream. Bean curd was magically delicious and the Loh Mee was like the expression of kiddos being given a McDonald meal. Pure delight ! Lovely ! This place deserved a 4/5.

FYI, they serve pretty good dim-sum for breakfast and it can be pretty packed with morning crowd. Worth venturing too if you wanted something more light compared to what we had.

Cheers.

Mandy's Cafe @ Summit USJ

I have always wondered why is Summit USJ Subang is such a popular shopping mall in Subang. Finding a parking lot there is almost impossible and you will have to resort to illegal parking unless you have all the time to wait for an empty lot and we resorted to the latter.

We are not the hardcore nuts who frequents Summit USJ often. It's like once in a blue moon kind of thing for us. This time it was CNY shopping that brought us there. My partner loved to shop for ladies clothing at the Summit as at times she is able to grab some cool stuff at bargain price. And so we did.

After all the shopping it was time for a good meal and a good time to relax our tired legs. We were really undecided in what to have for dinner as there was just simply too many choices to make and we even contemplated of having dinner out of Summit. From Western to Asian to 'fast food' to local food ..... and finally we decided to have it at 'Mandy's Cafe' which was situated at the LG.

This place reminds me of 'Dave's Deli'. The setting up of the counter and it's seating really do have the DNA of Dave's Deli. Not only that. The food being served there too have the same DNA but with extras where Dave's don't have. This place is truly a mixture of Western and Eastern food. You can find 'foot long sausages' to 'fried rice', from 'chicken chop' to 'assam laksa'. Cool choice isn't it!

Quarter Roast Chicken @ RM10.95+
Black Pepper Chicken Chop @ RM13.80+
It took us awhile do decide in what to order. We decided to go Western ~ 'Roast Chicken' and 'Chicken Chop'. No doubt that I would love to have a good bowl of Curry Laksa but I can get that anywhere but not the 'chicken' stuff we ordered. LOL.

The chicken chop surely does taste better compared to the quarter roast chicken. Chicken chop was fresh as it was cooked when ordered but the roast chicken was pre-cooked and when there's an order they will just re-heat it up which made the chicken overcooked and tasteless.

Pretty disappointed though. Nothing much to say about the food. Just that credit is only given to the plate of 'chicken chop' being fresh, at least there's some chicken taste in it. Oh well .... at least it managed to fill my half empty belly.

Conclusion : Pretty cool set-up, lot's of choices to choose from, very friendly service, pretty reasonable pricing, not so good food (based on the above order). But I reckon I should come back for another visit since they have so much to offer. 2/5.

Cheers.

The Manhattan Fish Market @ Subang Parade, Subang Jaya.

The sky was getting dark. Strong wind sweeping across the street. Cars were all started to look stale. Sunlight was beginning to fade. In a moment a gush of wind swept the streets again but this time it brought along the rain. Thunder was heard from miles away. Lightning struck with a glint of light flashing across the sky. The colour of the sky was even darker than the colour of charcoal.

We were lucky to be under the roof of Subang Parade but our parent in law was stuck in their car who looked like one of those stale looking cars on the wet evening street heading towards Subang Parade. Time was on our side, luckily, so that my parent in law need not do a Michael Schuey's F1 stunt under such uninviting conditions.

What we have is time but what we don't have is 'dough'. LOL. With so much time on our side it was perfect to continue with our shopping. I reckon we were one of those who will be kicking lot's of tires today. But hell broke lose we started what most people will call 'compulsive buying'. It's time to be jolly though and in within 1 month it'll be Chinese New Year. Heck ...... just do it!

It was time to bring everyone together to be seated together along a long table specially meant for food enjoyment. This time around we decided to dine at 'The Manhattan Fish Market' since my in laws have not dine here before.

Ceasar Salad
We had salad for a start which was pretty good. We loved the taste and it was finished and done with before the next dish was served. Could it be that we were hungry or was the food really good? In this particular scenario it was both. Even the bread crumbs was not spared.

Shrimp My Olio @ RM17.90++
This dish consists of sauteed shrimps and spaghetti swirled garlic, coriander and olive oil dusted with zesty chili flakes. Sounds good indeed. BUT it was totally different when I took the first bite. It was semi-awful since the pasta was so bland and doesn't have any significant taste to trigger our taste buds. Looks can be deceiving and this is a pure case of it. Seriously a RM9.90 restaurant can do a better deal than this. One consolation is there was freshness in the shrimps.

Grilled Gala Platter for 2 @ RM49.90++
This massive platter comes with grilled fish fillet, grilled tiger prawns & calamari with signature garlic herb mussels served on a bed of garlic herb rice and chips with scrumptious broccoli, carrots and corns on the side.
Premium Seafood Platter @ RM72.90++
This platter is perfect for sharing and crunchy to the last bite. Deep fried barramundi, deep fried shrimps, Louisiana Mussels and fried calamari served on a bed of garlic herb rice and chips, drizzled with garlic herb sauce and scrumptious broccoli, carrots and corns on the side.

What a feast!!! Both the platters was simply amazing and delicious. One is grilled and the other is fried. It was truly an amazing dinner and all of us ate like we've never eaten before. Everything was so fresh. It was not 100% perfectly done as some of the fried stuff was overdone but overall the platters tasted really good. Somehow I remembered the garlic rice tasted better before. This time it was less garlic-ky and less is not good as it doesn't give that 'kick @ss' feeling to it. Marvelous!

Conclusion : One of my favourite eating place. Loved the food and selected drinks are refillable which is good. Freshness was there but a little hick-ups here and there prevented full marks from us. Was better before and could be even better if they listen and improve on things. And pricing is a big factor too cause I find them to be expensive. A 3.5/5.

Cheers.

Nyonya Colour @ Empire Shopping Gallery, Subang Jaya.

This place seems to be a very popular spot for diners at Empire Shopping Gallery. We just couldn't resist the temptation of trying out this place as it is always packed with people. This place is called 'Nyonya Colour' serving authentic Nyonya dishes.

The decor of this place is pretty simple yet elegant with some kampung feel to it. Orders are made at the counter ~ be seated and wait to be served. It is always a good choice to order some local food at such outlet as this will tell whether they are a true 'Nyonya' restaurant.

Nasi Lemak Pandan Special with Chicken Rendang @ RM8.90+
As expected a plate of Nasi Lemak was brought to us. There was a special aroma which I have never come across that is the scent of the 'Pandan'. Special it was and very imaginative in making this simple dish into something special with a special name to it.

Rice was green in colour thanks to the effect of the pandan leaves. Condiment include 'ikan bilis', 'kacang', haf boiled eggand cucumber. This set comes with Rendang Chicken and some sambal squid. The portion was very small but worth exploring as it smelt really good.

Munch.... munch ...... hmm ....... tasted just so-so. Rather disappointed really. What looks good and what smelt good doesn't means that it'll taste good. Well, it tasted ..... ok but I was expecting more from it.

Mee Siam c/w Honey Chicken @ RM8.90+
Next came 'Mee Siam with Honey Chicken'. What a relief...... this simple yet delicious mee siam tasted really good. The honey chicken that came with it tasted good too. Portion was just ok but will not be enough for a 'big man' like myself. I wonder why their serving is so little ...... not a pretty pretty way to make money.

Ais Kacang @ RM3.80+
The shredded ice was done very well as it is very fine indeed. A plus for this as it is very important for the ice to be fine as it will make this bowl of ice kacang taste better. And it really does taste good! and I don't really mind going for a second bowl. The Gula Melaka was very aromatic which is very important. Pure delight!

Thab Tim Krup @ RM3.80+
I was really surprised to find this lovely 'Thab Tim Krup' being served here as this is a traditional Thai dessert. It's really worth a check as it is pretty rare nowadays to find this being served in restaurants other than Thai restaurants.

Again the ice was really fine which is good. Served with some water chestnuts and viola another 2 thumbs up. Another bowl of pure delight dessert. A must!

Conclusion : Pretty good place to dine and relax. Serves really good dessert but so-so for main dish. Pricing is pretty reasonable. Worth another visit.

Cheers.

Dome Cafe @ Subang Parade, Subang Jaya.

Wishful thinking ...... hmm...... I was dreaming of having a good cuppa today as I've not had a good one since Monday. A coffee lover will always be one. Just cannot live without it.

It was 11:30am and the desire for having a good cuppa is getting into me. A phone call was asking for me and 'viola' my good ole client from Subang Jaya invited me over for lunch at 'Dome Cafe'. I just couldn't hide my joy and happiness as Dome serves one of the best coffee in town.

RM9.50
This is what I had. A good cuppa of 'Cappuccino'. Look at this beauty. Isn't she lovely. I could faint by just inhaling the coffee aroma. It's so silky smooth and rich too. I can feel that I am being sane again from just a sip of  this 'Thunderlicious!!' coffee.  Two Thumbs Up!!

RM9.50
Over at the other corner, Joe had a cold tall glass of 'Iced Peach Tea'. According to Joe this drink is very refreshing especially for the hot weather we are experiencing now. How truthful Joe was a sip of this brought me back to the insane world. Chuckle. I'll better stick back to me cofffffeeeeeeeee.   Yeah!

RM24.50
Joe's lunch doesn't look impressive from how it looks but he insisted that this is one of the best meal he has ever came across and will never miss this for a million rupiah. LOL.... It's called 'Catch of the Day' and it consists of grilled fillet of fish which is marinated with cajun, cumin and lemon sauce topped with 'jonville' sauce and served with buttered rice. Condiments include mushrooms, sweet tomatoes, peas and heck!! I see some prawns served together with the fish. Cool.

It's awesome!! I was only given one bite as Joe refuses to give more. This is his heart and soul and by giving me one bite already hurt him. LOL. Yeah it's awesome. Fish is tender, succulent, juicy, well marinated, such a delight to sink my teeth into it. The buttered rice was very tasty too. I wanted more but I had to behave and control myself since I'll be having my favourite......

RM21.00
You got it right! It's a 'Beef Burger'. Woohoo.......... From the looks of it I can tell that this is a winner. This is a pure 100% grilled beef that comes with lettuce, tomato chutney, a slice of cheddar cheese, mustard mayonnaise and fresh tomato in a toasted focaccia bun. And there's chips too.

The chips tasted really good. Well fried. Every piece is crunchy and a winner. Dipped it into tobasco sauce or chilli sauce and you will want more. (There goes the calories).

The biggie... Beef Burger ..... just fantastic! Succulent, tender yet juicy. Unbelievable. So so so much better than the one I had down at Swensen's.  But then I still feel that T3T4 burger tasted better! Chuckle.

Conclusion : A must place to visit. Serves really good coffee as well as food. 'Fang-tastic'. I will surely come back for more. I was told by friends that their 'nasi lemak' is a winner too. More of a blockbuster. But there's a price you've got to pay for dining here. Do not expect a cheap meal at Dome Cafe but you are assured of good quality food.

Cheers!

Swensen's @ Subang Parade

Back in the 80's when Bryan Adams was a big hit in the rock n roll world,  punk & funk rules the British charts, Ford Mustang was every man's dream and Swensen's was the King of ice-cream which had monopoly the Malaysian market for a long long time. It was every kids dream to be slurping ice-creams at it's parlour. It was a hit back then where the outlets are always packed. This brand is made a household brand overnight and still lives until today. Just marvelous.

It has been a long time since we set foot to this place. Of course it's not the same outlet it used to be but this new outlets are more refine, more spacious, more ice-creams selections and more food selections too.

We were all so excited by just looking at the ice-cream menu. Just fabulous. I wished I could have all of it ..... but had to settle for a 'Chocolate Crunch' ice-cream and a 'Strawberry Stripes'. Such a delight as the ice-creams are so rich and creamy. Why didn't I order an 'Earthquake'. LOL.....

Our buddies started off with some kiddies meal...... 'Mini Beef Burgers', 'Sunny Omelette' and 'Mini Ham Sandwich'. Frankly, don't expect too much from this kiddie meals as it is meant for kiddies where the taste of this meals are just moderate which is healthy for kids. Each of this meals are selling at RM9.90.

My buddies also ordered a plate of 'Chicken Ceasers Salad'. This was a big disappointment. They can't even serve a decent salad and God knows what they can do. I have lost of words to describe how bad it tasted. :S

Next came the 'Mushroom Soup in a Bun'. The soup tasted pretty good and it goes really well with the bun. But just a little too sour for my liking. Tasted best while it's still hot.

As usual I will not forgo my favourite especially especially dining at Swensen's. It's the 'Mega Burger' which is one of their signature meals. Mega Burger is a gigantic burger that comes with juicy beef patty, chicken ham, beef bacon, grilled vegetable, onions, melted cheese with a fried egg to top it off. And it comes with some fries and coleslaws.

I would prefer pork bacon and ham instead of chicken as I always find pork to taste better. However we were not so fortunate as this place is 'Halal' which means you won't be able to find pork in this restaurant.

This burger surprisingly tasted quite good. The beef patty does indeed is juicy. Sinking your teeth into this burger feels like heaven. I would prefer the fried egg to come with half cooked yolk. Very filling meal indeed.

Conclusion : Good place for ice-creams. Enjoyed every moment of it. For the other meals especially the salad and the mushroom soup tasted really amateur. The chef ought to be shot. Kiddies meals are fantastic for kiddies. Mega Burger is really fantastic! Could be better. Not as good as T3T4 burger. :P

Cheers!
