Sakura Sakura Japanese Restaurant @ Subang Jaya

Weather was rather hot and it has been like this for the past weeks. Oh! how I wished for some rain showers. And the only rain showers I get is from my 'Grohe' rainshower set which I have in my masterbath ... something that I truly enjoy. This was the best way to reduce some body heat. :) Today is a special day as it is Sunday and because it is 'Father's Day'.

Since it was Sunday and Father's day too, we decided to have a lazy afternoon pampering our tired body by giving it some extra rest. And after all the resting, time for a food feast for the evening with our beloved father and mother in law.

Main Entrance
We took a drive to Subang Jaya in search for some really good Japanese food. Those that is not commercialized that we were seeking for. Everywhere was packed with people but we managed to find one which serves really good authentic Japanese food. This place is called 'Sakura Sakura'.

The minute you stepped into this outlet you will be greeted by their staff in Japanese. I truly enjoyed it as we felt really important. The environment of this restaurant is truly simple yet elegant. They really put in a lot of effort in making this place feel cosy and a lot of effort with the interior design too. Truly remarkable.

Moroheiya Ninniku @ RM15.00++
We were introduced to this lovely 'green' and was also highly recommended by their waitress. This vegetable is called 'Moroheiya' and is was supposed to be rich in A, B1, B2, minerals and calcium. And this is an organic plant too which do not contains any MSG. It was fried simply with garlic and sprinkle with some anchovies. This dish is really good ! Taste superb ! Two Thumbs Up !.... but the portion was really too little.

Teppan Gyoza @ RM10.00++
Not to be missed is the famous 'Teppan Gyoza'. It comes in a set of 5 lovely Gyoza which was not enough for all of us. It was truly remarkable, truly delicious, meat was well marinated, simply amazing. Highly recommended too !

Natsu Don @ RM18.00++
This is a box set rice set which comprises of some chicken cut into bite size mixed with a beaten egg. This set is my personal favorite and I will truly say that 'Sakura Sakura' took this dish one step further ~ delicious !

Chicken Teriyaki @ RM16.00++
The aroma of this dish was really breathtaking. It totally filled up our senses and all of us just wanted to grab a bite and continue to enjoy our dinner since so many marvelous dishes was brought to us. It was slightly salty but it was OK since it goes well with plain white rice.

Sukiyaki @ RM42.00++
And finally, a dish which I loved very much from the very first day I tasted it. This fantastic dish is called 'Sukiyaki'. I noticed nowadays most Japanese restaurant do not serve this dish anymore. I really wonder why? But this is found here at  'Sakura Sakura' because majority of their regular clients are Japanese and they always look for original authentic pure Japanese food.

Sukiyaki is normally done in a Japanese hot pot consisting of thinly sliced beef meat which is slowly cooked or simmered along with some vegetables, tofu, negi, mushroom and some jelly-noodles.

A tad too salty but this is the original taste of it. It was an amazing feat and amazing experience to have this fantastic dish served today. Goes really well with plain white rice and the soup is truly delicious.

Conclusion : Without any doubt I will rate this place a 5/5. This is for it's food quality which was amazingly delicious, plenty of variety to choose from, for it's environment, for it's decorations, for their hospitable service, for it's delicious food. I became an instant fan ! Keep it up !

Cheers!

Fatt Kee Yong Tau Foo @ Emporium Makan, Klang

A close friend of ours have been asking us to dine in Klang for a long time. He was telling us about his friend's outlet which serves good 'lou shue fun' in Klang. According to J, this outlet is in it's second generation and is very popular amongst the locals. For sure I wouldn't have known anything about this outlet until today.

It is located in the city's oldest medan selera in Klang town. To my surprised this outlet is called 'Fatt Kee Yong Tau Foo'. I thought we were there for a good bowl of 'lou shue fun'. O.o

Asked J about it and he says 'yeah' they are famous for their 'yong tau foo' too and their 'lou shue fun' actually comes with some 'yong tau foo' which is really something special. Without wasting more time we ordered what we came for and I really hope what J mentioned about the food is true.

When the bowl of 'lou shue fun' was brought to us I was rather taken aback as I did not expect it to be so 'plain'. It was pretty oily which is not to my liking and topped with some minced meat. Came with it is a bowl of yong tau foo in a bowl of soup.

Frankly, I didn't fancy the noodle at all. The bowl of noodle was just too salty, too oily, which take a lot of effort to finish it. But the yong tau foo tasted pretty good. Maybe because I am not accustomed to it's taste but Klang folks certainly does know how to enjoy this bowl of noodle.

The crowd was pretty healthy with mostly families coming in bus load flocking this outlet for it's 'lou shee fun'. Certainly this outlet is doing something right to have triggered Klang folks tastebuds. But sadly not mine, though.

There's this outlet beside it named 'Teo Seng Ngoh Heong' that serves 'lobak'. We ordered some mixtures of different types of lobak to go along with the noodles we ordered earlier.

Majority of the lobak were 'fried' stuff which we tried not to have too much of it. Nothing to shout about though just tasted normal-lah.

Conclusion : Famous with Klang folks but not with me and my mates. I will not come back even for half a bowl. I would prefer to drive myself all the way down town Kuala Lumpur for a good bowl of noodles instead of Klang. Lobak is ok-lah. A 1/5.

Cheers.

Happy Wok @ Tropicana Mall, PJ.

As usual it was kind of hard making a decision on what to have for dinner. There is just so many food outlets here in this mall that is making it hard for us to decide. Everything seemed to be so good and our taste buds just want it all.

Time was not on our side this time as we have a movie to catch. This time it was Kung Fu Panda. Looking at the time displayed on my HTC phone shows that we only have 30 minutes for our dinner. A quick decision has to be made and viola.... we ended up at 'Happy Wok'.

This outlet was the preferred choice because it was not really crowded and this works best for us since we were rushing for time. The first thought that came to my mind was ..... could the food be that bad since there was just a handful of crowd at the restaurant. But that did not deterred us from moving elsewhere.  Crowd was limited due to the fact that this is a NON Halal outlet. o.O

A browse through their menu shows they have quite a healthy variety of dishes and food to be explored. From chinese foodie to some local delicacies to some really simple ala carte foodie eg fried noodle or fried rice, etc.... And there was a handful of pork dishes to chose from which should be really interesting if you are a porkie lover. But this time we will just go for some 'express' ala carte meals.

Dried Beef Rendang Rice Set @ RM12.90+
The beef rendang set which I ordered was full of praise as the aroma was simply amazing. I have been a fan for such foodie since a very young age and I truly know what I was expecting the minute this plate was brought to me.

The meat was succulent and not overcooked which was a delight. Overcooked beef rendang can spoil the whole plate as the meat can be very tough. But Happy Wok managed to pull through this test and I truly hope they can maintain this quality which I experienced today.

Not too spicy and it goes really well with plain white rice. A little disappointed with the portion as it was just too little.

Beef Kuay Teow @ RM10.90+
My wife couldn't resists the temptation of this lovely plate of noodles which was fried with some ginger and spring onions. Frankly, both of us was pretty surprised with this plate of noodle. Portion was huge, aroma was breathtaking and just by looking at it made us XXXHungry.

True enough. The very first bite was made in heaven. This noodle tasted marvelous and the beef that came with it was electrifying. It was so near perfection, really. And it was such a delight fulfilling our belly with such delicious food.

Not forgetting the drinks we ordered ~ a good sized glass of soya milk (RM3.50+) and a very yummy good sized glass of sea coconut with longan (RM4.00+). Just worth every penny of it all.

Conclusion : I would definitely dine at this outlet again. For the simple food that we had today I believed if they managed to control and maintain their standards they can go a long way winning more fans. Good food at good price comes with pretty good service too. A 3.5/5.

Cheers!

Scrummy Restaurant @ Jalan Ipoh, KL

Have you ever wonder what 'scrummy' means? Googled it and found the following :~ "A combination of "scrumptious" and "yummy", used to convey that deep, satisfied pleasure that comes after you finish something (especially after a good meal)". This is what precisely was written all over their menu.

This lovely place is located at Rivercity off Jalan Ipoh in Kuala Lumpur. One would not miss this place as their corporate colour can be spotted miles away. It is situated opposite HSBC.

We were here by chance, actually. The weather was rather hot and we wanted to dine in an air-conditioned restaurant instead of the original kopitiam which serves curry noodle. Oh well..... no worries maybe next time.

The atmosphere of this outlet is pretty funky. Simple and nice. Some wooden tables are of XXL size and some comes with sofa type seats which is really comfortable after a hard day's work.

When East meets West ~ combo! Menu was pretty colourful ... from pastas to rice dishes to bread pudding to waffle to ice-creams to endless scrumptious selections. And the best thing about this place is that they have a handful selection of set lunches.

Set lunches starts from RM10.50+. And they do have some really funky names for their set lunches ~ seafood ala king, chicken enchelada with raisin rice, fried dorry with turmeric sauce and dried chillie beef. Sounds good eh ... but now to put them into some real tests.

Thai Pesto Seafood @ RM11.50+
This dish consists of fettuchini with seafood serve with Thai special pesto sauce. Looks good and tasted ok lah.... Frankly, I could hardly find any seafood in this plate of pasta. Prawns are so tiny and small but the worse part is that it is not fresh. Squids are from the same family too. I strongly felt that they should not sting on the ingredients. This is a big no-no and would not do any good to this plate of pasta. Frankly the taste is pretty good but ......

Seafood Ala King Set @ RM10.50+
This set comes with a free barley drink which is really value for money. Portion was pretty good indeed. And indeed it tastes really good too. Served with some rice and some pickles and some vegetables makes a whole lot of sense of a balance diet. Chuckle....

Conclusion : I was asking for more H2O as they use too much of MSG in their food. No wonder it tasted so good lar. This is a no-no from us all as we do not support too much usage of MSG in food preparation. It is worth another one or two more visits for us to try the other foodie. Hope by then they will reduce the usage of MSG. A 3/5.

Cheers.

Sushi Tei @ Tropicana Mall, PJ

Somehow, the weather is scorching hot. Somehow, work is just too much to digest. Somehow, I always have a huge craving for good food. Somehow, I don't know how I ended up in Tropicana Mall. Somehow .........

This particular mall has been a huge success, a huge hit amongst movie goers, a huge hit amongst grocery shoppers, a huge hit amongst food lovers and a huge hit amongst coffee lovers.

There are simply countless food outlets in this medium sized mall which serves a huge variety of food from Western to Eastern and to some Malaysian local delights. But there is simply one restaurant that interests me ie Sushi Tei, a Japanese restaurant situated at the ground floor.

The setup of this place is simply marvelous, simple yet delicious. There are various seating for huge crowd, medium as well as smaller crowd. Amazing! And they even have some seating at the sushi counter too.

But beware ! This outlet is always crowded. You will find a medium long queue of hungry fans waiting to be seated at the entrance and such scene is a norm. No joke. Somehow this place manage to pull in the crowd which means something is really cooking at this restaurant.

Egg Mayo @ RM3.20++
To start off the feast, first to be gobbled down my belly is a couple of 'Egg Mayo'. This is one simple delicious starter and believe me you will want more. We did our best to take in only a couple cause this was just the very first dish being brought out. There's more to come and we decided not to spoil it.

Homemade Meat Gyoza @ RM9.80++
Somehow I would prefer this to be made of pork instead of chicken. I have this tongue for pork meat as it taste so much better and yummier compared to chicken meat. Anyhow, be it chicken or pork or beef they managed to dish some really lovely gyoza. A tad oily but it was ok as long as it tasted good and good it was.

Umaki @ RM7.80++
Eel omelette is not really my cup of tea though.... But it was for my 'lou poh'. But then it would really be interesting to put one into my mouth and give it a go. Tastefully done, I must say.... really delicious..... and I had a second in my mouth without knowing it. A little sweet, a little salty, oh blimey... the eel had eaten my brain ...... :)

Ika Okonomiyaki @ RM18.80++
Aaahhhh.......... finally, my favourite, Okonomiyaki was brought to me with the red carpet rolled down. Wowsers...... just loved the sight of it and the aroma was overpowering the whole room. What a dish. This Japanese pancake was made with some squids in it which they believe they can price it at RM18.80 because of it. I find it rather costly but it was truly yummy ! With extra mayo this pancake just my tired stressful day back to turbo mode.

Oyako Don @ RM13.80
Aawww..... why must they serve all my favourite at one go. This Oyako Don means chicken meat topped with egg and served with rice. Pure delight to sink my teeth into it. Meat was tender and was well marinated. The texture of the rice was simply mind blowing especially when it was mixed well with the egg. Another champion !

Conclusion : Gambate ! Gambate ! Continue to dish out what you have done today maintaining the quality of the food and you will not go wrong. This is the reason why this restaurant is always packed! Food is good, service is good too, waitress are well trained and well mannered. Price is competitve. Outlet is clean and come with a relaxing ambience. A 4.5/5.

Cheers.

Restaurant Sam Yu Seafood @ SS3, PJ ~ Part 2

A relative was in town for a visit and it would not be complete without having a good meal in one of the popular restaurant in PJ. As usual the place was pretty packed with regular patrons even during the weekdays. We decided to dine in the air conditioned area since the weather was scorching hot.

The dishes we had this time was special and not the normal one would order. This bowl of bean curd with vegetable was superb. I liked this particular dish as it was not too sweet and not too salty. And it goes very well with a plate of rice. I was trying very hard not to consume too much rice but .... with such dish on the table .... makes it very difficult to have a proper diet.

Another favorite dish was brought to us and without fail it was finished before we knew it came. This lovely bowl of spinach was superbly done. The soup was sweet from the red dates that was cooked together which makes this a winner.

This plate of pork cooked with ginger and vinegar was specially ordered for my relative since he is a 'man eater'. And of course my wifey's favorite too. Frankly this is one dish that I will never touch as I do not fancy vinegar and fatty pork. But from the scent of the aroma filling up the room I can tell that this is one really good dish. LOL. At least both my relative and wife loved it.

And the last dish for the day, chicken cooked with shallots and dried chilli with a dash of Chinese cooking wine... is a must. Somehow this was not the best I had before but still ok lar..... It was a tad too dry and also salty. Goes very well with white rice.

Conclusion : Not too bad la but a little pricey. Portion was slightly disappointing. But choice of food was superb. My relative says it tasted good compared to those he had in Johor. A 3/5 will just do for today.

Cheers.

Restaurant Ang Kee @ Chow Yang, SS2, PJ.

Whenever I drive past the row of shops along SS2/10, I always wonder what's cooking there. This is because this row of retired shops has been given another new lease of life as more and more eatery choose to open their new outlets there.

Chow Yang at SS2 has been a sleepy town for the past years but it is totally a different story altogether. Demand for a vacant shop is tremendous as this has pushed the property prices and rental prices up a little. You may not find fancy fast food outlets there but you do find some very interesting food outlets there and also a few 'chain' restaurant there.

Finding a parking lot has been a problem now since more and more people flock to this sleepy part of SS2 in search for food. It is always a chaotic scene there especially every Thursdays as one of the biggest 'pasar malam' is being held there.

Restaurant Ang Kee has been plying it's business here for many years and can be considered one of the popular eating outlet here. This place is always crowded especially dinner time. All flocks of life can be found here which means this place is popular amongst family.

The setting up of this place is simple ~ but what is important is that it is well lighted and it is quite airy. Because the inner shop space is enclosed, noise pollution can be of great height when the place is crowded. To us that is only secondary issue and what's primary is to have a taste at their food.

This special dish consists of fish paste steamed together with mushroom and garnish with some broccoli. It's something similar my mom used to cook for us when we were much younger and it was pure pleasure to be able to find such dish. Fish tasted really fresh and has the springiness feel or texture to it which was superb. I truly enjoyed this dish and I would recommend it to those who have little knowledge about it.

This plate of 'siew kai' was a little too dry. But then ...... at least it tasted good. Well marinated and as long as it is not too salty it's perfect for me. The younger generation truly enjoyed snaring at the tender chicken meat..

...and the wise middle aged people like myself will prefer to sink my teeth in this sumptuous fish dish. Dunno what it's called .... LOL ..... but heck it goes really well with rice. This fish is called 'Fei Chow Yue' or in direct translation 'African Fish'. Deep fried a little and cooked with some house specialty sauce and viola a mouth watering dish. Yum....

Vegetable is a must and we decided to have two different types of vege. One for the faint heart and one for the adventurous. Two simple vege dish to cater for both the young and the old. Amazing ....

No mercy for this wonderful plate of 'nai yau har'. Simply amazing and is a crowd favorite. Prawns was nicely done and fantastically not overcooked. And it was snapped up in just a few minutes. Lovely.

To end the night we decided to order 2 plates of 'hokkien mee'. This was never in out list of dish to order but was recommended by the shop owner that we have to give it a go. And that's how we ended having it on the table. We have to thank the owner for this lovely recommendation as the hokkien mee was superb. A tad too sweet but otherwise it's perfect.

Conclusion : Not a bad place to take your family out for some good food. Place is clean and brightly lighted. Service was ok lar ~ what do you expect from such restaurant. Food was pretty good and it is pocket friendly too. A 3/5.

Cheers.
